A London-based charity, Who is Hussain, has given out dental kits to help address poor dental health in the homeless community.

The charity, inspired by Hussain Ibn Ali's legacy, identified a need in London for improved oral health and handed out kits to guests in Charing Cross on February 8 and Acton on February 9, 2025.

The team gave out the kits on the weekend of International Dentist Day, which celebrates the oral health profession.

The kits contained toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss provided by Colgate, Oral-B and Henry Schein.

The oral health kits were given out at the charity’s ‘Food Drives’ alongside a hot meal, a hot drink and fruit.

Many studies have indicated that homeless people have poor oral health and experience higher levels of cavities, tooth decay and periodontal disease than the general population.

A study by homelessness charity Groundswell, found that 90 per cent of homeless individuals have had an issue with oral health since becoming homeless, with a third currently experiencing dental pain. Seven in 10 reported tooth loss since becoming homeless, with 15 per cent of homeless people having pulled out their own teeth.

Kumail Jaffer, lead rep at Who is Hussain London, said, "Feeding the homeless and needy in London is something we have performed consistently for years.

"But some of our guests may be unable to take advantage as they are experiencing tooth pain or other oral conditions from a lack of dental care.

"Providing both short and long-term support is something we pride ourselves on at Who is Hussain London. This is in the spirit of Hussain Ibn Ali, whose charitable values inspire our actions today."
