Athlete's oral health

Research shows a direct link between oral health and sports performance. Thus, Annimari Korte, a Finnish endurance runner, finds it disappointing that sports bodies such as her home country’s Olympic Committee do not support the oral health of competitive athletes like they support general health by paying for medical and physiotherapy services. Even though good oral health is known to improve sports performance and results.

Dental health and brain volume

Taking good care of your teeth may be linked to better brain health, according to a study published in the July 5, 2023, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The study found that gum disease and tooth loss were linked to brain shrinkage in the hippocampus, which plays a role in memory and Alzheimer’s disease. The study does not prove that gum disease or tooth loss causes Alzheimer’s disease; it only shows an association.

Hunger and child tooth decay

​In a survey of 313 health practitioners conducted between June 8-22, 2023, members of the School and Public Health Nurses Association (SAPHNA) and the British Dental Association were asked about the impact of child hunger on children’s health. The survey aimed to understand the impact of child hunger on children’s health over the past year, as part of a national week of action coordinated by the National Education Union’s ‘No Child Left Behind’ campaign.
