Thinking about trying a dental apprenticeship?

Rex Fan explains why learning something new could boost more than your career.
Taking on a new challenge at work can be daunting. But did you know that apart from boosting your career prospects, helping you progress and achieve your goals, learning a new skill can also improve your mental health, wellbeing and even your brain health?
Our brains have the capacity to learn at any age. Keeping ourselves mentally challenged is crucial for building brain capacity and cognitive reserve, also known as neuroplasticity.
This is because learning new skills strengthens and builds the neurological pathways in our brains. So when we get an injury, our neurons are better able to adapt and compensate by forming new connections, in turn aiding recovery or even lowering the risk of developing conditions like Alzheimer’s.
Learning something new can also release dopamine, helping you feel happier, and it can even make you better at coping with the many tasks and responsibilities that we all juggle in our day-to-day lives.
Learn on the job
Bupa research shows that more than two in five people want a new role at work, either to increase their job satisfaction or try a new challenge. But for a quarter of people (27 per cent), a lack of self-belief is holding them back, while others are worried about learning the skills required, or having to take time out to study.
But an apprenticeship can be a great option, allowing you to ‘earn while you learn’ in your current role or explore your interests, all while gaining a new qualification which you can carry throughout your career to help open up new opportunities.
Mark Allan, general manager for Bupa Dental Care, commented, “The benefits of learning really are amazing, both for your career and your health, and starting an apprenticeship is a great opportunity to do both at once.
“If you’re thinking about a career in dental nursing, now is a great time to start. We have more than 180 dental nurse apprenticeships available, offering hands-on experience, training, and qualifications to help you build a rewarding career.
“Starting something new can feel like a big step, but in a caring profession like dentistry, life experience is extremely valuable. Your natural empathy, compassion, and enthusiasm will serve you well in this role.
“The great thing about doing an apprenticeship at Bupa is that you’ll have plenty of support to help you balance work, studying, and placements.
“We offer many different pathways to grow your career in dental care, whether you’re just starting out or looking to advance your skills.
“With a 10,000-strong team, there’s always someone who can help answer your questions and support you on your journey.”
Roshni Gurung, apprentice dental nurse at Bupa Dental Care Kingston, said, “After graduating from university, I knew I wanted a career in healthcare that involved interacting with patients.
“Dental nursing provided me with that opportunity. My apprenticeship with Bupa has given me valuable hands-on experience while also allowing me to learn at the same time, and I have had so much support along the way.
“I would definitely recommend this path to anyone looking for a rewarding career with real opportunities to grow.”
