The Society of British Dental Nurses (SBDN) has welcomed Chris Louca to its Honorary Fellows Board.

Chris Louca is the director of dentistry at the School of Dental, Health and Care Professions, at the University of Portsmouth. He is responsible for the undergraduate and postgraduate education of dental nurses, dental hygienists, dental therapists and dentists, with a strong emphasis on intra- and inter-professional learning.

Chris has over 30 years of experience in teaching, research, innovation and international accreditation/consultancy in dentistry. Previous appointments include King’s College London, where he set up the first School of Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy and UCL Eastman Dental Institute, where he developed several innovative postgraduate courses including a master’s degree in Restorative Dentistry.

At the University of Portsmouth, Chris launched a BSc in Dental Hygiene and a BSc in Advanced Dental Nursing to complement the existing BSc in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy. In addition, he has introduced a Master’s in Research (MRes) in Oral and Dental Health Sciences, and master’s programmes in Advanced Aesthetic and Restorative Dentistry, Advanced Restorative Dental Therapy, Advanced Digital Dentistry, and a PG Certificate in Conscious Sedation in Dentistry. He has supervised several PhD and over 90 MSc students in dental education, dental public health, and dental materials.

Chris regularly presents his work at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) and other international conferences, and has published over 100 original articles in dental peer reviewed journals. He received the ADEE Mature Career Dental Educator Award in 2015 in recognition of his work in dental education.
