According to research published in Tobacco Control, adults who smoke cigarettes and vapes are more likely to be long-term smokers.

The study from the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health followed regular smokers of both cigarettes and e-cigarettes starting in 2013. Participants received annual follow-ups to review their habits.

The data revealed that, over a six-year period, “quitting vaping early, but continuing to smoke was the most common pattern.” EurekaAlert! explains, “The team found that 42 per cent of participants fell into this category. Just 10 per cent of study participants quit both vaping and smoking early, and 15 per cent continued to use both products.”

Nandita Krishnan, lead researcher, said, “This study suggests that at the population level, vaping may not help people kick the smoking habit.

“People who concurrently use e-cigarettes and cigarettes experience increased health risks and both products deliver nicotine, which is addictive. We should be trying to help them quit both smoking and vaping.”
