To raise awareness of mouth cancer, Smile Together partnered with the Oral Health Foundation and the Mouth Cancer Foundation in November 2024, as part of Mouth Cancer Action Month.

With over 10,825 cases of mouth cancer diagnosed annually in the UK, the campaign focused on the importance of early detection to improve survival rates. By sharing information about the risks, causes, and self-check techniques, the collaboration aimed to empower communities to take action and ‘know their normal.’

Smile Together’s practices have supported the campaign, creating vibrant and educational displays to spark conversations about oral health and mouth cancer awareness amongst its patients and colleagues.

The Smile Together teams also embraced #BlueWednesday, wearing blue outfits, lipstick, and selfie props to raise awareness. The dental provider held a competition to recognise the most creative and impactful displays, awarding prizes to the winning teams.

As part of the campaign, Smile Together also launched free mouth cancer screening sessions for the public at its Truro practice. The screenings were designed to encourage early detection, promote regular self-checks, and raise awareness in the local community. These sessions included:

  • A quick, non-invasive examination of the mouth and soft tissues
  • Immediate referrals for further investigation where necessary
  • Oral cancer awareness leaflets for all attendees
  • Educational display boards featuring additional resources on mouth cancer awareness
