BioMin Technologies Ltd, manufacturer of BioMin F, BioMin C and BioMin F for Kids toothpastes, is delighted to support research in oral health care by sponsoring the annual BSDHT poster competition.

The awards, which were presented at the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy’s national Conference in Glasgow, recognise and celebrate the outstanding level of UK research undertaken by dental professionals, particularly hygienists and therapists.

First prize went to Lauren Barry, a dental therapist in the Community Dental Services, Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust, for her research entitled, ‘Use of the social story in dental therapy’, a case study of successful use of dental therapist skills in special care dentistry. Lauren’s prize is £400 towards a place at any conference in the UK or overseas.

Second, a free place at an Oral Health Conference (OHC) in 2022, plus travel and one night’s accommodation, was awarded to Cherise McColl, a student at the time of the research for her project, ‘Investigating the effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to aid dental fear and anxiety in paediatric patients’.

Third, with a free place at an OHC conference in 2022, came Sidra Ahmed Suleman, whose research into the oral health status of orthodontic patients asked the question, ‘Are oral hygiene standards being maintained?’

And fourth was Dylan Patel, who could not attend in person, with his project evaluating the percentage of patients who had received preventative education relating to their risk status for oral cancer, caries, periodontal disease and tooth wear, along with their respective risk factors. His prize was £100 travel reclaim for an OHC conference in 2022.

Richard Whatley, CEO of BioMin Technologies Ltd, said, “We are proud and delighted to be sponsoring the excellent research that is being carried out by dental hygienists and dental therapists. Reading the entries, I was extremely impressed by the standard and variety of the work that is being carried out. BioMin’s unique products are the result of British research, and we are very pleased to support research in all aspects of dental hygiene and therapy.”

Diane Rochford, president of the BSDHT, commented, “The standard of the entries for the poster competition is higher every year, reflecting the quality of research carried out by dental hygienists and dental therapists in their workplace and also as undergraduate students, ultimately providing the profession with a greater knowledge and evidence base to improve patient care. BSDHT are proud to collaborate and value BioMin’s continued support of the poster competition.”
