The enhanced CPD scheme, for DCPs in August 2018, aims to promote continuous, lifelong learning and maintenance of skills to provide a safer and more appropriate working practice.

This approach to CPD is against the idea that one size fits all, but training and development should be tailor made relevant to the individual professionals need, role, work setting and patient group.

To gain maximum benefit from your CPD Activity, the new scheme requires DCPs to complete a Personal Development Plan (PDP) to firstly identify CPD needs per cycle.

This will involve the following: Plan, Do, Reflect, Record.

LonDEC has designed a course, Arts and Crafts in Endodontic Nursing. This course is designed to update the nurse on the latest techniques and treatments for dealing with endodontic diseases.

In addition to this, dental nurses will be able to develop and improve on practical skills of four-handed endodontics and rubber dam placement, which will therefore enhance the work flow and confidence in practice.

Due to the architectural complexity of both dental burs and endodontic files, the pre-cleaning and sterilisation process has become evidently difficult. Therefore, many practices have concluded that some (if not all) of these items, are to be considered as ‘single use’.

This course will also clarify some of the dos and don’ts when decontaminating endodontic instruments/equipment and if it meets compliance of HTM 01-05 guidance.

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • To assist with rubber dam placement
  • To recall the purpose of the various instruments and equipment used in endodontics, eg: Hand, Rotary and Reciproc files and various Obturation systems
  • To recognise the ways infectious diseases can be transmitted among dental staff and patients
  • To list various methods of decontaminating endodontic instruments/equipment and how it meets compliance with HT M01-05
  • To determine single use items amongst the many components used in endo treatment
  • To safely manage inoculation injury.
